Shores residents to get lower water bills

After more than three years of wrangling and negotiating, Indian River Shores residents should receive their first reduced water bill in a week.
The water, which is provided by Vero Beach utilities, will cost them less than what Vero Beach residents pay as of October 1.
With the new deal, Shores residents will pay rates of $14.26 for every 2,000 gallons of water used, as opposed to $15.26 for Vero Beach residents.
Shores residents will reap an even larger savings as a result of a repricing of reuse water, which many use for irrigation.
Rather than lose the Shores as a customer, Vero last spring agreed to give Shores residents the same lower rates the county charges.
Indian River Shores stayed with the city because a county contract for water at a reduced rate would not have gone into effect for four more years. The thinking was that four years of savings with the city trumped what the county offered.
The contract is for 30 years. “Everything is in place. Expect the new rates in your bill right around Oct. 16,” said Vero City Manager Jim O’Connor.
